Angola has entered the final stretch of the electoral campaign, which will be held on the 24th of August. The outgoing president, João Lourenço of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), is seeking a second term. His party has been in power for the last 47 years. His main opponent is Adalberto da Costa Junior, head of the UNITA party.
A total of eight candidates are contesting for the president’s post. To many Angolans, this election is a defining moment since they feel that it would bring fresh thinking and policy parameters.

Each candidate is embarking on their agenda as to how to revamp the Angolan economy. The country, though rich in oil, is looking at developing other avenues of income. It is also laying focused on developing alternative sources of energy to partly replace the use of polluting fossil fuels.
