(3 Minutes Read)

The Angolan Secretary of State for Commerce, Augusta Fortes, announced that the first phase of Huatong Angola Industry’s aluminium production project will be inaugurated by the end of December. The project, located in the Barra do Dande Free Trade Zone in Bengo province, is expected to generate 1,200 jobs.

The announcement followed a meeting on Tuesday in Luanda between the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, and the Chairman and CEO of the Chinese multinational Huatong, Zhang Wendon. According to a statement from the Presidency, Augusta Fortes confirmed that the project’s first phase will officially open on December 27, marking the start of aluminium production in Angola.

Valued at USD 200 million for the initial stage and USD 1.6 billion overall, the project will unfold over five phases across roughly ten years. It aims to establish Angola as a leading aluminium producer in sub-Saharan Africa. Secretary Fortes emphasized the interministerial cooperation that made the project possible, citing the contributions of the Ministries of Energy and Water, Industry and Commerce, AIPEX, and the Bengo provincial government. “The Executive’s commitment was crucial in making this project a reality,” she stated.

Future phases will include facilities to manufacture aluminium-based products such as sheets, coils, alloys, and poles. A portion of the production will be exported, helping to diversify Angola’s economy, strengthen the metalworking sector, and improve the national trade balance through value-added exports and technical training for Angolan professionals.
