Angola assumed the rotating presidency of the Organization of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) for the next three years. The mission for the next three years for Angola would be to fight against poverty, achieve sustainable development, and integrate into the world economy.

Luanda hosted the 10th Summit of the Organisation’s Heads of State and Government. The seventy nine member organisation is tasked with coordinating activities under the 1975 Lomé Convention. All States, with the exception of Cuba, are signatories to the Cotonou Agreement, which replaced the Lomé Convention.

The main goals of the OACPS centre around the sustainable development of its members and their gradual integration into the global economy with the ultimate objective of reducing and eventually eradicating poverty.

This year’s summit has laid special importance on the youth and their all-around development in the member countries. The summit noted that the youth in developing countries face a lot of challenges due to weak economies, such as a lack of educational facilities for skill development, unemployment, etc.  Georges Chikoti, Secretary General of the OACPS called on the heads of state of the member countries to commit themselves to the cause of the youth.
