ANC tables legislation for land reforms

135

The African National Congress (ANC) is for the  establishment of a committee to formulate a legislation to allow for land appropriation without compensation. ANC has tabled a motion in Parliament to this effect. Setting up of the committee needs amendment to the section 25 of the Constitution.  An ad hoc committee established in the previous term of Parliament had lapsed.

The proposed committee will  consist of 11 voting members from five different parties. However, some of the opposition members were against such legislation. Recently, there was an exchange of words between mostly Whites and the ruling ANC members about the legality of such legislation. This also led to the US president Donald Trump supporting the White farmers in South Africa, who owns huge tracts of land and mining interests. Fair distribution of land is an important plank in the election promises of the ANC.  The Democratic Alliance, a political party,  where Whites have an upper hand  said that it will not be supporting the motion . The committee will report back to the National Assembly in March 2020.   By that time the amendment bill would have been completed.
