The Malian National Transitional Council (NTC) has adopted two amnesty bills, to protect the junta from prosecution. Junta led the coups that forced the overthrow of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020 and the ouster of transitional president Bah Ndaw in May 2021.
Souleymane Dé, chairman of the CNT’s law commission explained that the Amnesty bills provide that no legal action can be taken against the perpetrators and officials for offenses such as military conspiracy, insubordination, etc., said.
The new laws protect transitional president Assimi Goïta and members of the former National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) from any future legal action against them for crimes and offenses committed during the two coups.
Activists allege that such amnesties reflect the weakness of the government that forgives people for their unforgivable acts. It has been pointed out that Mali has granted amnesty to coup plotters earlier too.
