The digital transformation of Africa is on a fast track, propelled by the continent’s youthful population and rapid urbanization. Two of the global players in the cloud space, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google, are proposing to expand their footprints in South Africa.
Google, according to reports, is planning a cloud region in Cape Town with a data centre. The upcoming Africa Data Centres (ADC) may host the facility. The proposed facility of the Data Centre Dynamics includes a 20MW facility covering 15,000 square meters in eight data halls. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
Already, Retailer chain Pick n Pay has migrated its entire on-premises information technology infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The migration has reportedly enabled Pick n Pay to streamline its operations, modernize the supply chain network for its stores, develop new digital customer experiences in omnichannel grocery, and expand into new areas of business.
Amazon established its presence in South Africa in 2004 in Cape Town with the launch of a development centre. Amazon and its cloud computing arm AWS will soon be opening a new office in Johannesburg to offer its wide range of cloud-based services. The services will include pioneer technologies focused on networking, next-generation software for customer support, software programs used by AWS, and so on.
