French company Alstom will be delivering dozens of tramway cars to Casablanca which is the largest   city in Morocco.  The contract  is worth €130 million and the French company has  to deliver 66 Citadis tramway cars and an option for 22 more trams as  the city expands its transit network in line with Morocco’s plan to add two more tramway lines, which the North African country considers most suitable to Casablanca’s public transport system.

Significantly, the number of passengers using the already operational tram lines has gone up considerably in the recent years. More than 22,000 passengers travel by this mode of transport daily. To further expand the tram network, Casa transport seeks to add two more lines. Alstom earlier supplied 124 trams to Casablanca.

The new tramways in Casablanca will be double units with a length of 64 meters, which can carry a maximum of 630 passengers.  The manufacture of the tramway cars will  initially take place in Barcelona.  Sourcing materials for the manufacture of  subsystems of the trams will be made in Morocco, so that the host country’s manufacturing sector also benefits.

Casa transport has recently signed an agreement for a loan of Pound 100 million from the French Development Agency (AFD). The Agreement includes a grant of Pound 5.5 million.  Tramway cars are the safest mode of transport particularly for women. Close to 50% of the tram passengers presently in  the city are women.
