All payments in Rwanda are set to go digital by 2024. Already several institutions like the Bank of Kigali and some traders have started implementing digital payments. The Bank of Kigali(BK) is encouraging and recognising investors who have implemented the digital system. Satguru travel agency of India was also recently recognised for adopting digital payment.
A digital system dubbed Point of Sale(POS) has become popular in the capital Kigali and other towns from across the country. Recently the Bank rewarded Simba supermarket for using POS and getting clients to pay digitally. Dr. Diane Karusisi, Chief Executive Officer of BK said that the government wants everybody to adopt digital payment because it is cheaper. POS reportedly allows quick transactions and government can save the cost of printing notes. BK so far has distributed 2500 POS machines to traders. The spokesperson from the Bank said that free machines are available for people willing to use them in their businesses.
