Algeria’s First Homegrown Electric Car Set for 2026 Debut as National Innovation Drive Accelerates

(3 Minutes Read)

Algeria’s first electric vehicle is steadily taking shape, with its prototype set to be unveiled in March 2026. The ambitious project, launched in April 2023 by the Centre for Research in Industrial Technologies (CRTI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, marks a major step forward for the country’s scientific and industrial development.

Speaking at the Forum of Channel 1 on National Radio on Monday, September 29, Minister of Higher Education Kamel Baddari confirmed the project’s progress, highlighting it as a key achievement of Algeria’s science and innovation strategy. He noted that the vehicle is part of a broader government initiative focused on securing national needs in food, energy, water, and health—while also aiming to commercialize homegrown technological advances.

Among those advances are Algeria’s first domestically designed electronic chips, now entering a phase of high precision, according to the minister. Originally slated for completion in 2025, the electric vehicle’s launch was postponed due to the project’s technical complexity. Professor Mohamed Bouhicha, Director General of Scientific Research at the Ministry, had previously announced the 2025 timeline during a February 2024 interview. However, delays have shifted the debut to 2026. A consortium of the CRTI and industrial partners is expected to begin production next year.

International expertise is also playing a role in the project. Renowned battery scientist Karim Zaghib, an Algerian native based in Canada, has offered his support to help establish a domestic lithium industry—an essential component for the electric vehicle supply chain. Earlier this year, he collaborated with the Ministry of Energy and Mines to lay the groundwork for this initiative.

Zaghib expressed confidence in Algeria’s potential to produce a fully homegrown electric car, citing the strength of Algerian talent both within the country and abroad. “We will work from mining to manufacturing a 100% Algerian electric vehicle,” he stated.

The government’s latest updates, along with growing contributions from global experts, signal a promising future for Algeria’s push toward technological sovereignty and sustainable mobility.
