Algeria is still caught up in a political brinkmanship. Algerians  are set to boycott the June 12th legislative elections, as they are fed up with People’s National Assembly representatives and large scale corruption that has pulled the country into a deep economic crisis.

In capital city Algiers the majority of information panels remain empty, indicating the lack of interest of the citizens.  There are 34 seats to be filled up from there. The elections were supposed to be held in 2022. However, it has been brought forward by Algerian officials, which the critics allege to serve their own ends. Many feel that it is a ploy by the government, who heavily rely on the military, to regain control circumventing the strong Hirak movement, which has entered its second year of protests. The government has failed twice in mobilizing voters in the 2019 presidential elections and in the 2020 referendum. However, the military is keen to pull on with its rule, without addressing the demands of protesters.
