Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad resigned yesterday (Thursday) along with his cabinet. He submitted his resignation to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The country held the parliamentary elections in mid-June, in which the ruling National Liberation Front Party won a majority of seats.
Algeria is facing a number of economic ills stemming from drop in oil prices, inflation and massive unemployment. On the top of it, it has to rough up the onslaught created by Covid-19 pandemic. These are the tasks awaiting the new government. Djerad has been the the prime minister since December 2019.
Algeria has also been rocked by political turmoil which began shortly before the departure of veteran ruler Abdelaziz Bouteflika. President Tebboune was in doldrums while a protest movement has demanded an overhaul of the country’s political system.
