Algerian President Kais Saied had a telephone conversation recently with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to express his   regrets over the reduction announced by Paris of visas granted to Tunisians. His (Kais Saied) cryptic statement was posted in a Facebook page.

President Saied said that the issue of irregular migration can only be addressed on the basis of a new vision and added that this would be one of the priorities of the new government of Tunisia, expected any day now.  The two heads of state reported to have discussed migration issues during the telephone conversation. They agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in this area.

Paris recently announced the reduction in the number of visas granted to nationals of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The French charge is that these countries refused the consular passes necessary for the return of immigrants turned away from France.

The Tunisian president grabbed full executive powers at the end of July creating consternation among the international community. He dismissed the government and suspended the parliament. A few days ago, he asked Najla Bouden to form a new government and to pave the way for an early election.
