Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune began a state visit to China to discuss economic and diplomatic priorities as the North African nation seeks to become less dependent on gas and raise its global profile. The Algerian President is also keen to become a part of the BRICS and will be using this opportunity to seek support from China in this endeavour. Tebboune last month visited Russia, a longtime military partner and supplier and an active member of BRICS along with China, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

At the same time, Algeria claims it has remained officially neutral in Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Significantly, Tebboune spent two days in Qatar before landing in Beijing with a large business delegation. Diplomatic circles say that it testifies to a desire to deepen cooperation beyond the economy.

BRICS membership has become a diplomatic priority for Algeria with the upheaval in the global economy, particularly due to the war in Ukraine. During his visit to Russia in June, Tebboune offered to help mediate the conflict. China’s role as the first non-Arab country to recognize Algeria’s provisional government in 1958, was established amid its brutal war of independence from France.
