Algeria’s Minister of Transport, Saïd Sayoud, and Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, jointly chaired a high-level coordination meeting to discuss the establishment of a new national airline dedicated to domestic passenger air transport. The initiative follows directives issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at reshaping and strengthening Algeria’s internal air transport infrastructure.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Transport, the primary focus of the meeting was to assess the operational framework for launching this new airline. A major component of the discussions involved the transfer of resources—both fleet and personnel—from Tassili Airlines, a company currently affiliated with the Sonatrach oil and gas group, to the new airline. This transfer is considered crucial to ensuring a smooth and efficient launch of the new air transport company.

To facilitate the process, the meeting concluded with a decision to establish a joint working group composed of representatives from relevant sectors. This group has been tasked with immediately initiating the transfer of aircraft and staff from Tassili Airlines to the newly proposed domestic carrier. Their work will lay the groundwork for the successful operationalisation of the project.

Present at the coordination meeting were key stakeholders from across Algeria’s aviation and energy sectors. These included representatives from the Sonatrach Group, the acting CEO of Tassili Airlines, the CEO of Air Algérie, the heads of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the National Air Navigation Company (ENNA), as well as delegates from the Ministry of National Defence and senior officials from both the Transport and Energy ministries.

The Ministry of Transport emphasised that this strategic initiative is designed to bolster national cohesion by improving air connectivity between Algeria’s various provinces (wilayas). By enhancing geographic coverage and transport links, the new airline is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s broader socio-economic development goals.

This meeting follows up on a previous working session held on March 12, 2025, during which President Tebboune personally reviewed the state of Algeria’s air transport sector, including both Air Algérie and Tassili Airlines. After that session, it was decided to create a new domestic air transport company operating under the umbrella of Air Algérie, thereby reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernising and expanding national air services.
