Influential army magazine of Algeria – El Djeich –came heavily against suspicious strikes and called people to shun that to ensure national security ahead of the legislative polls. At a time when Algeria is hit by food shortages, soaring prices and unemployment at 15 percent, strikes debilitated further the economy, the magazine said.

Algeria’s economic crisis has been triggered by the drop in oil revenues and the political deadlock since the re-commencing of pro-democracy Hirak uprising. The movement began two years ago after former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika tried to stand for a fifth term in office. The collective efforts of the people expressed through widespread demonstrations forced him to step down.

Despite him demitting the office, the protesters have continued demanding a thorough overhaul of the ruling system, which have several inadequacies. Algeria got independence from France in 1962. The Hirak has given a call to boycott the general elections to be held in June this year.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the dissolution of the parliament, paving the way for early elections. The current parliament was elected in May 2017 for a five-year term.  The next legislative elections were scheduled to take place in 2022. Because of the dissolution of Parliament, the elections now will take place in June this year.
