Algeria has set an ambitious goal to increase the value of its non-hydrocarbon exports to $5 billion by the end of 2025, according to Abdelatif El-Houari, Acting Director of Export Support Mechanisms at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion. This move marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil and gas revenues.
Speaking on national radio, El-Houari revealed that this export growth is being fueled by a surge in international trade agreements, particularly those signed at global exhibitions and trade fairs. Over the course of the current year, Algeria has entered into more than 80 international commercial contracts as a result of its active participation in such events.
He emphasized that both domestic and global economic forums now play a strategic role in promoting Algerian-made goods, offering platforms to establish solid trade partnerships and expand market reach. These forums are no longer merely promotional opportunities but have become critical components of Algeria’s foreign trade strategy.
Among the highlights of 2025 so far:
- At the Algerian Products Fair in Nouakchott, Mauritania (May 2025), 44 exclusive export contracts were signed. Several of these deals include the establishment of joint ventures between Algerian businesses and their Mauritanian counterparts, highlighting growing regional cooperation.
- At the Moscow Fair in September, 18 export agreements were finalized.
- In Spain, during an agricultural products expo, 12 contracts were signed, focused primarily on the agri-food sector.
- Additional trade deals were concluded during the International Fair in Slovenia, further strengthening Algeria’s commercial presence in Europe.
El-Houari also reported a 23% rise in non-hydrocarbon exports in the first seven months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. This growth, he explained, is largely driven by Algeria’s success in diversifying its export markets. Algerian products are now being shipped not only to traditional European partners but also to North America, Asia, and various African nations.
He added that geographical proximity to Europe, coupled with regular and efficient maritime shipping routes, continues to be a key factor facilitating the expansion of Algerian exports, especially in terms of logistics and delivery timelines.
