Algeria: National Integrated Waste Management Program Launched in Ouled Djellal

(3 Minutes Read)

The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouter Krikou, officially launched the national integrated waste management program on Tuesday in Ouled Djellal, targeting both elected local officials and waste-treatment companies. This initiative forms part of a broader government strategy to modernise waste management and strengthen environmental governance across the country.

During her visit, the minister inaugurated a pilot training program designed for local administrators, aiming to equip them with the skills required to develop efficient municipal waste management systems and plans. Once refined in Ouled Djellal, this model will be expanded nationwide to enhance local performance, protect the environment, and improve citizens’ quality of life.

At the INSFP Smati-Bouzid exhibition, Krikou underscored the growing need to train young people in environmental and sustainability-related fields. To support this vision, four new vocational specialities have been introduced:

A first practical training session will begin in Ouled Djellal, serving as a testing ground before the program is implemented at the national level. These efforts are intended to accelerate the shift toward a green economy and the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

The minister also highlighted the importance of environmental entrepreneurship, particularly encouraging rural women to engage in eco-friendly projects. In addition, she launched a digital caravan aimed at raising environmental awareness among children.
