Relations between Algeria and Morocco are getting complex and difficult. , mainly because of the Western Sahara dispute. The long standing border dispute often referred to as Western Sahara Dispute between the two countries has drifted them apart for many years.   The border between the two countries has been closed for more than 25 years.

Accusations fly past from both sides. Morocco has accused Algeria of meddling with its internal affairs by supporting the Western Sahara pro-independence movement. It may be noted that there is a diplomatic shift in Morocco in the recent days. It has initialized new relations with countries like Israel, and the United States. This did not go well with other countries in North Africa, where there is considerable support base for Palestine.

On the other hand, the Algerians feel that Morocco is engaging in a systematic proxy war against it. For instance, the recent wildfires, a section of Algerians feel,   was  a plot against Algeria. An investigation is underway to fix  the origin of these fires. Algeria has also accused Morocco and Israel of supporting the Movement for the Independence of Kabylia, a pro-independence organization, as well as the Islamo-conservative organization Rachad

Morocco apprehends the possibility of the closure of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which has been connecting Algerian fields to Europe via the Moroccan kingdom since 1996. Importantly, the contract   for the passage of the pipeline expires next October.
