The economic situation in the Sahel countries requires taking concrete initiatives Algeria and Niger are starting processes of energy interest, which will have consequences for the countries of the region and Europe. The trans-Saharan gas pipeline connects Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria whose aim is to supply European countries. The challenge concerns several countries, particularly with global energy disruptions.
Niger is full of natural resources, in particular the Kefra deposit which holds a reserve of 400 million barrels. Algeria invested in this project to expand the investment capacities for Sonatrach in Africa and will have positive economic results for Niger. Various projects bring together the two, and “It should be noted that the Kefra deposit is 80 kilometers from the Algerian borders, which means a strong presence of Algerian companies and also of Sonatrach which has proven its mastery of engineering and in the realization. Also, this means a strong presence of Algerian companies for subcontracting. Such cooperation will make it possible to achieve economic complementarity between Algeria and Niger, says economic expert Abdelkader Slimani.
In particular, major projects that require establishing a clear and stable policy “This gas pipeline linking Lagos and Algiers costs 12 billion dollars. It will have to pass through Niger, and which will have an economic return on this Sahel country. Algeria has a capacity and an infrastructure equipped with a pipeline over a length of 2200 km. And this trans-Saharan gas pipeline will export 30 billion M3 of gas to Europe. It would then be up to Niger to achieve sustainable economic development, and a possibility of improving the socio-economic life of the Nigerien people to achieve security and stability”, concludes Slimani.
