The Russian-Algerian intergovernmental commission for trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation that met recently focused on the scope for developing trade in agricultural products, including increasing the shipments of Russian wheat to Algeria.

Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev and Algerian Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni discussed the modalities for increasing wheat exports from Russia to Algeria.

Algeria’s annual imports of wheat is estimated to be 6 million tones which include 5 million tonnes of soft wheat and 1 million tonnes of hard wheat. A significant source of its imports of wheat was Russia until it discontinued the imports five years back after Algeria hiked the threshold for corn bug damage in wheat imports to 0.5% from 0.1%. Algeria resumed imports of Russian wheat in June 2021 after a five-year break.  After the successive easing of requirements, Russia could increase wheat shipments to the Algerian market. The specific quality (high-pro) of wheat required by Algeria is grown primarily in Krasnodar Territory and Siberia. Apart from wheat exports, the meeting also explored partnerships in engineering, energy, mining and pharmaceuticals.

The bilateral trade between Russia and Algeria touched $3 billion in 2021.
