After completing almost a decade of exploration work in Ethiopia, Akobo Minerals, a Norway-based gold exploration and development company has announced that it has applied for a large-scale gold mining license in Ethiopia. The normal duration of a large-scale mining license is for an initial period of 20 years and then for an additional 10 years. The company said that it proposes to secure a long-term operation for the next 20 years as well as the permission to continue exploration work to enable it to prepare for mining operations.

The company revealed that mining will be an integral strategy of the company. The decision was based on its successful drilling in the country and high-grade mineral resources found from Segele. The mining Licence applied for largely covers the area of the company’s existing exploration license. The Minister of Mines Takele Uma said that the Ministry is working closely with Akobo Minerals and the mining license is expected to be finalized in a week.
