Airtel, India based mobile telephony company, which has extensive operations in Africa, has become the first telecom company in Tanzania to launch an embedded sim, known as e-sim. The new device, which is now available in the market will enable customers to have the same functionality as a physical sim. The card-the universally integrated circuit card- can be permanently attached to the phone.

Analysts say that e-sim by airtel is an innovation and is a testimony of the company’s commitment to its expanding customer base in Tanzania. Airtel sources said that the customers who wish to change over to e-Sim from the physical mode will have to visit their offices.

There is an additional bonanza for customers. They can add a new number to their account while continuing to use the physical sim. The two numbers can be operated from the same phone, thereby helping customers not to have another phone for the new number. The company also said that the customers who are mobile using services of other operators can switch over to the e-Sim facility being offered by the company.
Airtel Tanzania sources expect the new and innovative service of the company will have more takers. The mobile telephony services in Tanzania are getting penetrated so also the broadband connectivity.
