Airtel Kenya shows profit: Company strategize plans to take on Starlink

Ashish Malhotra, CEO, Airtel Kenya, the second-largest telco by market share in Kenya, in a recent interview with a media house said that the company started making a profit in 2022, after registering losses for a long 12-13 years. He attributed the profit trail of the company to its affordable products launched in the market.

He revealed that the company was on a continuous trail to improve its bottom lines by offering competitive products in a market known for its high-pitched competition in the telco sector.

The Kenyan market has recently seen the entry of   Elon Musk-owned Starlink. Terming it as an interesting development that has happened in the country, Malhotra said that it would lead to serving underserved areas in the East African country. He further said that Airtel also would invest very heavily in this market. He did not see Starlink as a threat to Airtel as the company was working out strategies to face the competition by enhancing its investments in critical areas. Fair competition, he said, was always welcome.  He further revealed that Airtel would bring its services further close to people to gain incremental acceptability.

Airtel has 2,100 Airtel shops across the country, and is aiming to have at least one shop in every ward, or two to three shops in every ward, he added, revealing the future plans of the telecom major. Airtel has launched its 5G network in Kenya. It has covered over 370 sites plus and would add another 120 sites in three months’ time. The network width of 5G is becoming approximately 490 sites in the next three months. 5G is available on phones as well as on routers and now we have launched a very innovative product for the very first time on a wireless network.
