Airtel Africa has officially announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX to bring high-speed internet services powered by Starlink’s satellite technology to customers across the African continent. This collaboration is poised to transform digital access in Africa by leveraging the strengths of both companies to serve even the most remote and underserved regions.
Currently, SpaceX has secured the necessary regulatory licenses to operate in 9 out of the 14 countries within Airtel Africa’s footprint. Licensing processes are actively underway for the remaining five countries. Once completed, this will enable a more seamless and extensive rollout of Starlink’s satellite internet services across the continent.
This partnership will significantly bolster Airtel Africa’s next-generation satellite connectivity solutions. It aims to enhance digital infrastructure not only for commercial enterprises and businesses but also for vital socio-economic institutions such as schools and healthcare centers. By utilising Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network, Airtel Africa intends to extend reliable and affordable internet access to rural and hard-to-reach areas. Additionally, the companies will explore the use of satellite backhaul to improve mobile network coverage in these regions.
