In a recently published study, the Moroccan Institute of Strategic Intelligence (IMIS) the Moroccan think tank, has observed that Morocco has the potential to create a strong agri-food business industry. Citing the success of OCP Group, the state-owned company engaged in phosphate rock mining, phosphoric acid and fertilizers manufacturing, it pointed out that the country’s agrifood sector also has similar potential to become a leader in the sector and curb its dependence on Agri-food imports.
The study also pointed out some of the challenges inhibiting the growth of the agri-food business. It noted that strategies in recent years such as the Green Morocco Plan 1 and the Green Generation Project have improved the agriculture input significantly.
the country is yet to create an “agrifood industrial complex” that would target both the national and international markets. The Think Tank argued that the absence of a strong agrifood industrial complex has been a major setback for the development of the sector.
Many state-owned or policy institutions like Morocco’s Caisse de Depot et de Gestion (CDG) are giving high priority to the Moroccan agri-food industry.
IMIS’s analysis advocated the Government to make the agrifood business the cornerstone of its recently formulated development model to promote food sovereignty and international trade by 2030.
