In an unprecedented development last week, after detaining the interim prime minister and president Colonel Assimi Goita took control of the country. In response, the African Union announced the suspension of the membership of the West African country of Mali late on June 1st. The AU also joined the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and warned Mali of sanctions if power is not restored to the civilian transitional government.
