African leaders are up in arms against US President Donald Trump’s
Mideast peace plan and termed it as illegitimate and uncalled. The
leaders have used the African Union summit to express their solidarity
with “the Palestinian cause”, which they feel is jeopardized by the
American stand to support Israel.

AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat took upon himself to
express the bitterness of the African collective stand.  The Trump
plan unveiled in late January, he lamented, represented the “umpteenth
violation of multiple United Nations and African Union resolutions”.
The plan bereft of objectivity and without any international
discussion had “trampled on the rights of the Palestinian people”. The
qualification of the plan in strongest words   drew applause in the
main hall at AU headquarters, where the summit is in progress. .

Palestinians had boycotted the plan over its overt and covert
pro-Israel stance and total neglect of sovereignty of the Palestinian
nation. The plan envisages giving Israel permission to annex
settlements in the Israel occupied West Bank, which the Palestinians
consider as their future state. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah
al-Sisi, who is the  outgoing head of the AU made the remark that  the
Palestinian cause would  always be in the hearts and minds of the
people of Africa. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who   will
take over as the chair of AU  compared Trump’s proposals to
regulations in place during his country’s apartheid period.
Incidentally, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who regularly
attends AU summits, gave this time a miss. Palestine government is
moving a resolution in the UN condemning Trump’s peace proposals,
which will be vetoed by the US.
