At the UN’s General Assembly held recently (Wednesday),  African leaders flagged different issues. While Kenya’s president, William Samoei Ruto and Nigeria’s Buhari were concerned with the climate crisis, which is taking a heavy toll on the continent, a few other leaders retold the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the economic pick-up and adverse consequences on the price spiral.

Nigerian President Buhari highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on the continent. While its contribution to carbon footprint is least, the impact was heavy, he said.  The same view was echoed by Ruto, the newly elected president of Kenya. He said that the northern arid and semi-arid rangelands of his country have been gravely impacted by drought, which the country never faced in the last 40 years or so. As a result, close to 3.1 million people living in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands are now severely food insecure on account of scarce rainfall over three consecutive seasons. He called for financial support for nations facing climate shocks, which came back-to-back with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zambian President Hichilema expressed concern about the ongoing war in Ukraine and its negative consequences.  Prices of fuel, fertilizer, and other key commodities were jacked up on account of the war. In the meantime, expressing his concerns, Nigerian leader Buhari said challenges raised by the war in Ukraine and other recent crises justify calls for the reform of the United Nations system to make the Security Council and agencies more representative. These institutions, he felt, should be capable of meeting current demands. The 77th UN general assembly will end on 26 September.
