Rwanda has been chosen as the continental headquarters for the African e-trade Group. The decision of the African Union was announced on 7th June the annual Africa Integration Day through its department of Economic Development, Trade and Mining.
The goal of the African e-Trade Group, social entrepreneurship is to support 600,000 SMEs in Africa over the next five years. The primary aim of the initiative is to offer a comprehensive e-commerce platform to strengthen the role of Africa’s SMEs in inter and intra-African trade.
Speaking about the development the Minister for ICT and Innovation of Rwanda, Paula Ingabire, said that the move is expected to boost Rwanda’s vision of becoming an ICT and logistics hub in Africa. She pointed out that initiatives such as Smart Africa and YouthConnekt Initiative are already hosted in Rwanda. The new addition of the Ae-trade Group is another initiative to continue supporting trade across the continent.
The facility’s headquarters in Rwanda will host its SMEs programme, build a data centre in the country that will facilitate lowering the cost of hosting data prices for SMEs.The facility is expected to create more than 5000 jobs in the next five years and also help Rwandan SMEs to grow beyond the borders of Rwanda by exporting Made in Rwanda products to other African countries
