An agreement allowing the export of Ukraine wheat, as well as agricultural products via the Black Sea, was signed in Turkey on July 22. The deal has come as a relief to the continent which is faced with the risk of a looming food crisis. The United Nations and the African Union (AU) have welcomed the signing of the UN-backed deal by Russia and Ukraine which will help ease the global food crisis. The Agreement was signed by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. UN chief Antonio Guterres thanked Russia and Ukraine for having overcome their differences to serve the global interest. The agreement will facilitate the resumption of cereals exports from Ukraine and Russia to global markets.
Following this agreement, grain, foodstuff, and fertilizers across the Black Sea can be exported from the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Yuzhne. The deal came after the UN-led talks in Istanbul on July 13. It was decided to form a coordination center to carry out joint inspections at the entrance and exit of the harbors, and to ensure the safety of the routes. Ukraine and Russia together account for 30% of the global wheat trade. For many African countries, a major share of their imports comes from Ukraine and Russia.
