African countries called for an end to a “climate injustice”. Implicit in that is the incongruity in the proportion of emissions it creates and the price it has to pay because of climate change. According to its reckoning, the continent causes less than four percent of global CO2 emissions. Yet, it has to pay one of the highest prices emanating from global warming.

The release of this data coincided with the opening of Africa Climate Week held recently, which was attended by government officials, international organisations, NGOs, and the private sector from 54 African nations. The event was held at Gabon’s capital to prepare for the COP27 UN climate conference in Egypt to be held in November.

At the meeting, Gambia’s president Ali Bongo Ondimba told the gathering to speak with one voice and offer concrete proposals for COP27. He exhorted the attendees that Africans should take destiny into their own hands while adding that global initiatives had failed to meet climate targets. He called upon African nations to take advantage of the inherent assets of the continent to attain sustainable prosperity, such as abundant natural resources and demographic dividends to usher in a new architecture of sustainable development.

Lacing the after-effect of climate change and its impact on the continent, the host country’s president said that it is the most vulnerable continent from the climate change angle, despite the low emissions emanating from the region. Droughts are causing extreme famines and displacing millions of people across the continent.

Referring specifically to the Horn of Africa, the Gambian president said that 22 million people in the Horn of Africa face starvation because of drought and famine, cyclones, rising sea levels, etc. The cities most affected are Dakar, Lagos, Cape Town, and Libreville. COP27 will be held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh in November this year.
