The African Development Bank urged development has urged all
stakeholders in the fertilizer value chain to develop more effective
financial  institutions, which can address the problems of the
farmers.  The Bank has appealed to  NGOs, farmer cooperatives, and the
private sector to develop a more proactive approach  to the needs of
the farmers, who require active financial support  to switch over to
the right and optimal fertilizer mix.

This clarion call was made by the Bank during the Argus Africa
Fertilizer Conference held on 19 February with the theme   Supporting
the fertilizer value chain to improve agricultural productivity and
economic growth in the region.

The AfDB  has a special fund AFM to accelerate agriculture development
in line with the Bank’s high-5 priority, Africa Food Security Vision,
the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Participants at the conference also discussed the need for closer
cooperation between development partners and commercial banks to
create  evolve fertilizer financing opportunities throughout Africa.
It also called for active involvement of  SMEs  for providing
smallholder farmers with quality fertilizer.

The Bank officials insisted that digital solutions like the e-wallet
in Nigeria could play a more significant role in revitalizing and
connecting the fertilizer supply chain.  The digital transformation
can greatly help  farmers to  move in fertilizer value chain. The
Forum provided an opportunity for Mali to showcase how effective
public-private collaboration and better organization of value-chain
actors helped raise the country’s fertilizer use to 50kg of nutrients
per hectare.
