There has been increasing dialogue between the governments of France and Rwanda to expand bilateral cooperation, after the visit of President Macron last year. In yet another move to deepen its ties with Rwanda, the French Development Agency (AFD), a public financial institution that implements the policy defined by the French Government has opened its country offices in Rwanda. AFD also signed several agreements with some of Rwanda’s main development institutions.
According to a statement from the AFD Group, Rwanda will be allocated €200 million during the next two years, in addition to the already existing funds operated by the French Treasury and the French Embassy. For 2022-2023, Rwanda will focus on human capital (health; education and vocational training), sustainable economic development, and local development and access to basic services.
Both the sides are also exploring partnership opportunities in the fields of education, digital technology and innovation, green finance as well as sport and development.
AFD signed agreement with the Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD), for knowledge sharing, and with the Ministry of Health for some specific projects including rehabilitation of the Musanze hospital, support to vaccine production, training of health professionals and peer exchanges between health facilities and research institutions in France and Rwanda.
