The Council of Ministers for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has adopted a proposal from Algeria to reformulate the report on industry, investment, and integration rates in the continent. The decision was taken during the 12th AfCFTA meeting, held in the United Republic of Tanzania.

This proposal was put forth by the Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion. This proposal is set to be elevated for consideration at the forthcoming Council of Trade Ministers meeting, due to take place in South Africa.  Taieb Zitouni, the Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion stated that the final validation and adoption of the proposal would occur at the SA meeting.

During the first day of the AfCFTA Council of Ministers meeting, the attendees discussed the Secretary-General’s report for the year 2023. Zitouni stressed the importance of accelerating the implementation of the remaining files under discussion. He emphasized removing any obstacles that prevent the establishment of a real foundation for this collaborative trade space.

Among the pending issues are the adoption of the rules of origin associated with the textile and automotive sectors and integration rates. These outstanding matters are crucial to furthering the cause of free trade within the African continent.
