Sugar shortage has been recurring in Ethiopia frequently for some time. The City Administration Trade Bureau of Addis Abbaba has announced that the capital city is hit by severe shortage in the supply of sugar products in the city due to a shortage of supply. Though the city has a quota of 120, 000 quintals allocated by the government, during the past four months, it received less than half of the quota. It was reported that there was a shortage in government subsidized sugar supply.

To overcome the deficit, Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration is planning to talk to sugar importers in Ethiopia.

The biggest sugar factory in Ethiopia in Horo Guduru Wollega zone of Oromia regional state, Fincha Sugar Factory was forced to close for a week in February this year, due to safety concerns. The closure of the factory has led to a shortage of sugar supply.
