AD Ports Group Launches Luanda Terminal: A Strategic Move into Angola

(3 Minutes Read)

AD Ports Group has begun the long-term management and development of a major multipurpose terminal and logistics business in Luanda, Angola, representing a significant move into sub-Saharan Africa. This project is in collaboration with Angolan companies Unicargas and Multiparques, with AD Ports Group owning an 81% stake in the terminal and a 90% stake in the logistics venture.

The Port of Luanda is the largest in Angola, handling around 76% of the country’s container and general cargo. It also serves as a vital maritime gateway for neighbouring landlocked countries, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Under a 20-year concession agreement with the Luanda Port Authority signed in April 2024, AD Ports Group plans to invest approximately $250 million by 2026 to modernise the terminal and develop Noatum Unicargas Logistics, a joint venture that will offer integrated logistics, transport, and freight forwarding services for local, regional, and international clients.

Upgrades for the Luanda port terminal include transforming it into a facility for general cargo, containers, and roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) operations. Notably, it will be the only terminal in the Port of Luanda with a depth of 16 meters, allowing it to accommodate Super Post Panamax vessels of up to 14,000 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). The terminal area will expand to 192,000 square meters and will be equipped with advanced technology and modern IT systems to enhance efficient container handling.

This significant investment is anticipated to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, along with opportunities for training and skill development. Planned investments will also focus on equipment and technology solutions that promote environmentally sustainable operations with reduced carbon emissions.
