- The Abidjan-Lagos road corridor is a critical project for West Africa, that will facilitate free movement and trade in the region, a necessary condition for the AfCFTA.
A meeting was held recently to attract investors to finance the construction of the Abidjan-Lagos road corridor project. Speaking at the meeting, President of AfDB, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina noted that the Abidjan-Lagos road corridor is a critical project for West Africa that will facilitate free movement and trade in the region, a necessary condition for the AfCFTA. Such a development will encourage investment in other economic sectors and create job opportunities for people of West Africa. It is also an important part of the Dakar-Lagos Corridor, part of the Trans-African Highway Network as well as the 25-year ECOWAS Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan, Adesina said.
The Abidjan-Lagos Road Corridor project includes a six-lane supranational highway that has the potential to develop into an economic development corridor to connect five ECOWAS Member States (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria). The linkage to be built in collaboration with the corridor countries will facilitate cross-port links, free movement and improve cross-border economic exchanges between the five Member States.
The corridor project is an integral part of the Second Priority Action Plan of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA-PAP II) and falls under the new ECOWAS Vision 2050, that envisions to make ECOWAS a fully integrated and interconnected economic region.
