The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Egypt had registered a growth rate of 15.2 percent during the fiscal year of 2019-20 despite the pandemic, according to ICT Minister Amr Talaat. The focus on distance learning is there to stay even after the pandemic. To be in the game, Egypt has to develop skills that promote digitalization. It prompted the ministry to double the number of trainees in the ICT sector. The ministry also has doubled the branches of training institutes in the governorates.
The minister was giving the closing address at an ICT training program organized by the Information Technology Institute (ITI).
The current crisis, the minister pointed out, has contributed to changing management systems towards accepting the new work culture of work from home. Other countries are also adopting this model paying the way for greater business opportunities that can be transacted through virtual medium. To enable Egypt to take advantage of the situation, he stressed that the skill gap should be closed. There are many opportunities and training programs provided by the Ministry and its affiliates to improve the digital skills of youth. He revealed that the training opportunities provided through the government sponsored programs were increased from 4,500 in 2018 to more than 100,000 in 2020. The government, he said, is giving more importance to self-employment of the people.
He pointed out that there is a current trend by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to promote avenues for self-employment skills to prepare independent professionals. That would Egyptian youths to compete in global markets leveraging their skills.
