Cote d’Ivoire is gearing up for presidential elections scheduled for October 2020. The Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) has announced the nomination of Pascal Affi N’Guessan as their candidate for the presidential election. With just three months to go for the elections, the FPI still remains divided over the absence of Laurent Gbagbo’s name on the electoral lists.

The tussle continues between the “renovators” represented by Affi N’Guessan, who are involved in political life and have taken legal control of the party, and the supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo, transferred to The International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2011.The supporters of Guessan allege the supporters of the former president of risking the party’s future by refusing any alternative to the former president.

Spokesman of the Electoral Commission confirmed that the name of Gbagbo has been removed from the lists. Article 4 of the new Electoral Code, implies that the former president Gbagbo who was found guilty in 2018 in the case of the “BCEAO robbery” is not eligible to be included in the voters’ lists.
