Significantly, the volume of Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) transactions in Ghana increased over 444 percent in the first half of this year compared to the year ago period.
MMI transactions from January to June stood at 13.8 million compared to 2.5 million recorded in the same period last year. The data is provided by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) Half Year Performance report,
The significant increase in the MMI volume could be attributed to increased awareness that funds can now be transferred across wallets of different telecommunications networks.
A series of campaigns are held by GhIPSS together with its partner institutions to increase the awareness among the general public about the mobile money. The Covid-19 situation, where social distancing is the new norm, would also have contributed to jump in transactions through mobiles.
