Ethiopia Poised to Host COP32 in 2027, Marking a Major Milestone in Africa’s Climate Diplomacy

(3 Minutes Read)

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country has been chosen to host the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP32—a significant diplomatic achievement for both Ethiopia and the African continent. In a short statement shared on its official social media channels, the Ministry noted that with strong and unified backing from the Africa Group, Addis Ababa is positioned to welcome global climate negotiators and policymakers in 2027.

According to the Ministry, Ethiopia’s selection reflects the country’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, exemplified by national initiatives such as the Green Legacy campaign and substantial public investment in renewable and clean energy production. These undertakings, the Ministry said, demonstrate that “Ethiopia embodies the spirit of sustainable transformation.”

Reports from Reuters on Tuesday revealed that Ethiopia had been competing against Nigeria to secure hosting rights for COP32. Ultimately, Ethiopia garnered broad continental support through the Africa Group—a coalition that often coordinates African positions in global climate negotiations.

Hosting COP32 would carry significant weight for Ethiopia. According to diplomatic sources, the role would give Ethiopia the COP presidency for the year, granting it the authority to shape the summit’s priorities, influence the negotiation agenda, and guide the development of final outcomes. The position would also provide Ethiopia a high-profile platform to spotlight its own climate vulnerabilities, adaptation needs, and environmental strategies.

Though the final decision has not yet received full formal confirmation, Ethiopia’s selection has been largely endorsed by African nations. As reported by Reuters, Ethiopian Ambassador to Brazil, Leulseged Tadese Abebe, told delegates during a plenary session of COP30 that his country was “deeply grateful for the trust and confidence bestowed on the Ethiopian people and government.”

While COP32’s host is now expected to be Ethiopia, the host country for COP31 remains undecided, with Australia and Turkey currently competing for the role. Meanwhile, COP30 is underway in Belém, Brazil—situated at the edge of the Amazon rainforest—where more than 50,000 participants have gathered from across the globe. Ethiopia anticipates a similar scale of attendance when COP32 convenes in Addis Ababa, positioning the capital to become a focal point of global climate diplomacy in 2027.
