Tata Advanced Systems Inaugurates India’s First Overseas Defence Manufacturing Facility in Morocco

(3 Minutes Read)

In a landmark step toward expanding India’s global defence manufacturing capabilities, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the defence arm of the Tata Group, has launched India’s first overseas defence production facility in Berrechid, Morocco. The facility will manufacture the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, making it the first Indian defence plant on the African continent.

This strategic development aligns with India’s larger vision under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aimed at promoting self-reliance in defence while transitioning from “Make in India” to “Make for the World.”

The manufacturing unit has been inaugurated by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during his recent official visit to Morocco from September 22 to 23, 2025. This visit marked a significant diplomatic milestone, as it was the first-ever visit by an Indian Defence Minister to Morocco, undertaken at the invitation of Abdeltif Loudiyi, Morocco’s Minister Delegate in charge of National Defence Administration.

The facility will focus on producing the WhAP 8×8, India’s first Amphibious Wheeled Infantry Combat Vehicle, developed jointly by TASL and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This advanced armoured platform is designed for superior mobility and battlefield effectiveness across varied terrains. Key features include:

  • An integrated power pack with automatic transmission
  • Amphibious capabilities with floatation and propulsion systems
  • Enhanced lethality and survivability in combat scenarios

The Berrechid plant is expected to manufacture up to 100 WhAP units per year, with the first batch slated for delivery within 18 months. The facility represents a full-fledged greenfield defence plant, capable of producing complete combat-ready platforms—something no Indian defence company has achieved abroad till now.

According to Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of TASL, this contract holds immense strategic value, positioning Tata Advanced Systems as a key player in the emerging African defence market, which is anticipated to grow rapidly in the years ahead. The company has also established a wholly owned subsidiary, TASL Morocco, to support operations and local engagement.

This milestone not only underscores India’s evolving role in global defence supply chains but also serves as a strong signal of India’s industrial and diplomatic outreach to Africa. By establishing a manufacturing footprint overseas, India is showcasing its capacity to build sophisticated defence platforms that meet international standards and export requirements.

The launch of this facility is expected to open up new defence cooperation opportunities between India and African nations, further reinforcing India’s strategic presence on the continent.
