The Kenyan government is building 4,096 affordable houses in Starehe Sub-County under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), to be sold via the Boma Yangu platform. These include 2,364 affordable units, 1,062 social units, and 400 market-priced units, with prices starting as low as Sh640,000 for a single-room unit. Built on 22 acres of government land, the project features 21 blocks, each with 13 floors, and will include amenities like a parking silo, commercial centre, early childhood facility, police post, dispensary, and community centre.
Former informal settlements, including Matopeni slum, were cleared to pave way for the development. Around 250 locals have been employed, with more jobs expected as the project progresses. Local artisans will be engaged for fittings like steel doors and windows.
During a site tour, Nairobi Regional Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo emphasized timely completion and urged cooperation among public servants and agencies involved. He also encouraged the use of the National Government Delivery Committee to resolve project challenges swiftly.
The committee also inspected the Green Park Terminus Underpass, which will serve over 21,000 pedestrians daily and feature CCTVs, lighting, shops, lifts for the disabled, and security patrols.
