At the closing of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) on August 22, African Union Chair and Angolan President João Lourenço commended Japan’s strong commitment to supporting the AU’s Agenda 2063 through collaboration and resource provision. Speaking in Yokohama, he emphasized that a key achievement of the conference was the alignment between African and Japanese priorities for joint efforts toward sustainable development.
Lourenço described the discussions as highly productive, helping to shape practical strategies for advancing food security, education, healthcare, and infrastructure across Africa. He pointed to the Final Declaration of TICAD9 as proof of significant consensus and noted that the cooperation journey between Africa and Japan, which began in 1993, has yielded tangible results. This year’s conference saw the signing of numerous legal agreements across various sectors involving nearly all African nations represented.
