GERD negotiations in full swing-Ethiopia

· The tripartite negotiation between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on the Guidelines and Rules for the first filing and annual operation of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continued for the fifth day is continuing as of Monday, 15 June 2020

· The discussions among the three countries are still eluding a final outcome.

· The US has taken the initiative to mediate among the three countries to fast track the process of finding a solution. But, for
the time being, that process is also in a limbo.

The tripartite negotiation between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on the Guidelines and Rules for the first filing and annual operation of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continued for the fifth day is continuing as of Monday, 15 June 2020. According to the Ministry of
Water, Irrigation and Energy of Ethiopia, the three countries negotiated on technical issues on the first filing and annual operation of the GERD. In the previous day, the meeting discussed issues like the rules on the first stage filling, volume of environmental flow, guidelines for first stage filling, the drought management rules, rules on dam safety, environmental and social impact assessment studies, and entry into force of the Guidelines and Rules etc.

In tandem with that, the latest consultations held on 16t June 2020 focused on drought management during the filling up operations of
GERD. The negotiation will continue further to discuss the legal issues. Thereafter, the trilateral meeting would follow under the
chairmanship of Ethiopia.

The discussions among the three countries are still eluding a final outcome. The US has taken the initiative to mediate among the three
