Burundi expels WHO team

In its preparation for elections, to choose president, parliamentarians, and local officials, Burundi has ordered the expulsion of the WHO team from the country.  UN investigators described the decision as ‘regrettable’. The WHO team was supporting Burundi to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

United Nations Human Rights Council tasked by the UN investigators to probe alleged violations and abuses in the country since 2015, also expressed their concerns about the authorities’ decision to expel the WHO team. In a letter to the WHO’s Africa representative in Burundi the foreign ministry of Burundi said the UN agency’s that the WHO team in Burundi “are declared persona non grata and as such, must leave the territory of Burundi” by May 15. It is also reported that the WHO team in Burundi was accused of unacceptable interference in the management of the coronavirus.
