Ethiopian Airlines will ferry Tanzania’s horticultural products to
Arabian, European and American markets thrice a week. An innovative
agreement to this effect was reached between the Tanzania Private
Sector Foundation (TPSF) and the Tanzania Horticultural Association
(TAHA).
The deal would preserve international markets of Tanzania’s
horticultural exports, thereby beefing up the supply side of many
items, which are on heavy demand during the Covid-19 days and beyond.
The move will help preserve jobs of farm workers at this crucial
juncture.
The agreement will catalyze the flower trade from Tanzania, which is
the fourth largest exporter of flowers, particularly to countries like
the Netherlands, the US and several other countries. It is also
actively scouting for expanding its footprints in flower exports to
China and other Asian countries, which are mostly dependent on Hong

foreign exchange earnings of the East African country.
The innovative agreement will also have a beneficial impact on export
of various other horticultural goods from Tanzania, besides, fruits
and vegetables. Against the backdrop of fall in employment due to
Covid-19, a boost in horticultural exports would help in providing
employment to many people, who have been depending on small businesses
and construction their livelihood. Horticultural crops like
tomatoes, cabbages, onions, carrots, round potatoes, mangoes, oranges,
and flower seeds etc are cultivated in Tanzania, which have export
potentials. The cargo plane, which will be pressed into service,
should have a minimum plane load of 15 metric tons.
