Cabinet members in Botswana will be donating 10% of their salaries
towards the country’s COVID-19 relief fund. This was announced by Vice
President Slumber Tsogwane. Members of cabinet have pledged 10% of
their salaries to the relief fund for a period of six months. The
deductions will come up to US$14,000 per month and US$84,000 over the
six-month period.
In another development, all sixty-nine lawmakers in Botswana have been
placed under compulsory quarantine. The parliament referred to as the
National Assembly comprises 65 members of Parliament including the
president and speaker. A report says that seven new cases had been
confirmed in the southern African country bringing the national tally
to thirteen. Amongst them included a health worker who was on duty in
Parliament, while it was in session.
In early April, President Masisi was released from self quarantine
after he travelled to Namibia for the swearing in of his counterpart
Hage Geingob. At the time Namibia had recorded cases and Botswana had
yet to record a case. The president’s test result returned negative
allowing him to resume duties at his office.
