Airtel Tanzania provides free internet access to 50 government schools in Rombo district, Kilimanjaro region as part of Airtel Tanzania’s efforts to improve digital literacy in Tanzania. The donation is part of Airtel’s partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) project called Airtel SMARTWASOMI, which aims to bridge the digital divide and enable government schools to access learning resources.
Speaking during the handover, Airtel Kilimanjaro Regional Business Manager, Faustin Mtui, commended the Tanzanian government for investing in partnerships with the private sector to bring about development in the education sector.
These 50 ODUs will help support the government’s efforts to provide digital education at Rombo Secondary School by enabling access to online learning materials. These devices are linked to the Airtel Smartwasomi project which will provide teachers and students with FREE online content that will keep them abreast of the advancements in digital education.
For his part, the acting Regional Education Officer – Teacher Adam Ally expressed his sincere gratitude to Airtel Tanzania for its continuous efforts to strengthen the education sector in the country, emphasizing the important contribution of cooperation in solving the challenges of the education sector.
This assistance will significantly contribute to improving the learning environment for students in the Rombo district and ensuring that they succeed academically. In parallel, teachers will also receive modern teaching materials, use innovative methods to improve their training and make them teach more effectively, stated Regional Education Officer, Adam Ally.

The Airtel Smartwasomi project was launched on May 31, this year, with the aim of installing digital teaching and learning systems in about 3000 government schools in Tanzania over a period of five years. The 50 devices that will be provided to public schools in Rombo district will enable students to access self-study materials, improve their understanding and increase their performance. Teachers will also benefit from access to new teaching methods and resources so that they can teach their subjects more effectively.
