A national mourning of three days has been declared by Somalia in memory of ex-Prime Minister Nur Adde, who died in a London hospital after contracting coronavirus (covid-19). The national flags have been decreed to fly at half-mast. The former Prime Minister was the first transitional government prime minister. President of Somalia in a statement acknowledged the contribution of the deceased to the country and its people.
Nur Hassan Hussein, popularly known as Nur Adde, was admitted to Kings College Hospital in London, UK, for treatment for Coronavirus over the past two weeks. He succumbed to the virus on 1st April. The former premier was born in 1930 in Mogadishu, and completed his education in the capital. After serving the Somali Police Force, he became the Secretary of the Somali Red Crescent Society. He was appointed as prime minister on 22 November 2007. He led the crucial reconciliation meeting held for Somalis in Djibouti in 2008, where a section of the Islamists (Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia -ARS) joined the transitional government.
He was defeated in elections by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and elected as president in January 2009. Later on, Nur Adde was posted as the Somali Ambassador to Italy and lived in Rome until he was replaced and moved to London, UK.
